Miami prepares for Hurricane Shawn

Fredericton, NB — Local Psychotherapist and Parenting Expert will speak as a guest lecturer at the University of Miami in Coral Gables Florida on September 20th, 2018.

Shawn Smith, founder of Don’tdis-my-abilityhas quickly emerged as a North American thought leader in the area of Neurodiversity. He was invited to share his personal journey as a self-advocate with ADHD as part of the UM Autism Lecture Series.

Sought out internationally for his expertise; this will be his third trip to Florida in as many years. Last year Smith participated in a panel discussion alongside Dr. Temple Grandin at the Trailblazing 2018 Conference in Fort Lauderdale Florida.

It was at Trailblazing 2018 where he met Dr. Michael Alessandri, the Master of Ceremonies for the conference. Dr. Alessandri is the Executive Director of the Centre for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD)and a Clinical Professor of Psychology and Pediatrics at the University of Miami.

About Shawn Smith

Shawn Smith M.Ed., CCC is the proud founder and CEO of Don’t dis-my-ability™ consultation services Inc., an innovative, multifaceted company specializing in the emerging field of Neurodiversity located in Fredericton New Brunswick, Canada.

Counselor, Psychotherapist, and national award-winning entrepreneur are just a few of Shawn’s many accomplishments but what he does isn’t nearly as exciting as the why. Diagnosed with ADHD Inattentive Type at age 30, Shawn struggled through every level of the public education system. Prior to his diagnosis, it took Shawn 4 years to finish 3 years of high school, 32 attempts to earn the 18 credits required to graduate including failing grade 10 math 4 times.

Prescribed medication gave Shawn’s brain the jump-start it needed to wake from a 30-year slumber taking his thought process from dial-up to fibre op. In 2010 Shawn was accepted to the Masters of Education in Counselling Psychology Program at the University of New Brunswick on Academic Probation and graduated a year later at the top of his class.

About CARD

The Center for Autism & Related Disabilities (CARD) provides support and assistant with the goal of optimizing the potential of people with autism spectrum disorder and related disabilities. Currently, there are 7 centers in the state of Florida. The Centers have been providing services and supports at no charge to individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families for 26 years. CARD is the largest state-wide model program for autism supports in the United States and is now being replicated in other states across the nation. All funds generated through events sponsored by CARD are used to enhance or develop needed supports and services for individuals living right here in the state of Florida.
